Pex Labs is looking for help!
Since we are a small team, roles are not fixed. You can expect to wear many hats depending on your interests! Don't be afraid if you don’t have all the skills that fit a role, a desire to learn is the most important! Choose what you will enjoy doing!
If you stick around to become a core member you can be sure to
Please note that this is a completely volunteer position. As such, there is no obligatory level of commitment, although at the end of the day, what you get out is what you put in. If you make a notable contribution and show commitment, you may be able to convert to a core member. We are also open to remote work, although some roles may prove difficult online.
Maintain our website (pex-labs.com). Implement features to make the website more fabulous - like a 3D viewer, embedded game player and web shop. Will work closely with designers to implement their designs. You may also handle our CI/CD pipeline and deployment.
Develop the applications that run on the game console. We have a charming open source game launcher (https://github.com/pex-labs/picolauncher) complete with a game browser, music player and image gallery. You can expect to write rust code that interacts with linux such as wifi and bluetooth subsystems, over-the-air updates and database operations. You will also be working extensively with the PICO-8 game engine, which uses a modified lua API.
Develop firmware and maintain the build pipeline of our own linux distribution: PexOS. You can expect to read linux source code and do a ton of kernel hacking! Be prepared to mess with display drivers, configure the wifi chip and write configuration files for X11.
Design the PCBs for our next generation embedded linux platform and other products like a console dock and game controllers. Expect to bust out some diabolical electrical engineering skills and design subsystems like audio, wifi/bluetooth and LCD display. You will also be in charge of sourcing components, communicating with manufactureres and managing the supply chain. Oh, and probably designing test fixtures for the console itself too.
You will be in charge of any and all physical components on the console. Expect to work on prototyping changes to the case, experimenting with new materials and thinking about ergonomics. You will also get to work with manufacturers to get the parts produced.
Run our socials, reach out to influencers/newsletters/other orgs, and secure funding. You can also expect to engage heavily with our community, so bonus points if you are excited about retro gaming and/or pico8. You may work on youtube videos/shorts and help organize events like hackathons!
Web design, graphic design and illustrations for socials. You will set the tone for our brand and how we present ourselves to the world. You may also create concept art and dream up future products for us to prototype!
